The ongoing consumer demand for SUVs means that several manufacturers constantly go back to the drawing board to develop new models and improve their current offerings. However, that also means we get to see continuous improvement in the vehicles that are offered each year. The 2023 Subaru Ascent is a great example of a brand upgrading and enhancing a current model to keep it exciting and technologically relevant to the modern driver. As the largest vehicle manufactured by Subaru, it’s a testament to the Japanese-based manufacturer stepping up to popular demands by entering the world of the 7- or 8-passenger SUV and adding more and more features to it each year.

Like much of the current Subaru fleet, the Ascent is equipped with the brand’s renowned all-wheel drive. Still a relatively new vehicle, the Ascent has been in production since 2019 and is manufactured here in the United States. While Ford and Chevy have been the popular choices for SUVs on the larger end of the spectrum, it didn’t take long for the Ascent to make a considerable impact on the market. In 2019 alone, sales exceeded 81,000 units. With a redesign for the upcoming model year, we’re going to look at this larger-than-life offering from the brand that reinvented the concept of sustainable all-wheel drive.

Performance

Standard All-Wheel Drive and an Excellent Powertrain

Subaru has never cut corners or taken shortcuts when providing drivers with the best performance and capability. They’ve always provided features and items that allow consumers to maximize the use of their vehicles. For the upcoming model year, the Subaru Ascent combines the necessary performance for a larger SUV with the cost-effective attributes many consumers keep a keen eye out for.

Like its predecessors and siblings, the Subaru Ascent uses a Boxer engine: a 2.4L Turbo Boxer-4, to be precise. The 2.4L possesses a horsepower rating of 260 and can generate 277 lb-ft of torque. This is an impressive amount of performance for such a large family-oriented SUV. This engine provides a great amount of fuel efficiency as well. Even with all-wheel drive, drivers can expect to see somewhere around 21 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. This efficiency can be partially attributed to the Ascent's CVT (continuously variable transmission), which is ideal for most four-cylinder engines as it allows the vehicle to adjust to the road conditions easier and can make your drive more efficient.

With its standard all-wheel drive, the Ascent can be utilized for off-road performance as much as possible for the daily commute and trips to the grocery store. The design of the Ascent is perfectly fitted for both situations. The Ascent’s ground clearance of 8.7 inches makes it more off-road capable than most SUVs, allowing you to go from the pavement to the road less traveled without any difficulty. Should you need to bring some extra toys along for the ride, you’ll be able to do so with a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Interior

Comfort and Tech for the Whole Family

If the capabilities underneath the hood are enough to pique your interest, then the wonder that awaits you when you sit behind the wheel will cause enormous elation. In recent years, the interiors of the Subaru fleet have been styled to resemble the cockpit of a star fighter from a galaxy far, far away. Anchoring the interior is the new infotainment screen, which is in an upright vertical position and stretches to 11.6 inches. This part of the vehicle’s new redesign is far superior to the previous consoles, which only measured 6.5 to 8 inches. This new interface is compatible with both Apple and Android mobile devices, allowing any driver to enjoy their favorite music or podcasts on the open road. Speaking of which, a voice-activated navigation system from Tom-Tom ensures you get to wherever you need to go.

Cargo space in the Ascent is generous and will easily adhere to anything you need to transport. With up to 86.5 cubic feet of available storage space, the long haul got a lot easier. This SUV provides more cargo space than rivals such as the GMC Acadia, Nissan Pathfinder, and Kia Sorento. With seating for seven or eight passengers, you can squeeze in the entire family for that road trip you’ve been planning for years. If comfort is a top priority, we recommend springing for the higher trim levels, which offer heated seats and an eight-way driver’s seat.

For those whose comfort is accentuated by sound, Subaru has an available feature that’s too decadent to turn down. Harman Kardon, one of the world's most renowned stereo companies, has been in a long partnership with Subaru, and what they make available for the 2023 Ascent will blow your mind away, but luckily not your speakers. Speaking of, the Harmon Kardon system consists of fourteen speakers with a 792-watt amplifier. You won’t have trouble filling your car with sound, even if it is laden with cargo and company.

Safety

One of the Safest Brands on the Road

While the exterior of the Subaru Ascent looks fresh and invigorated for the 2023 model year, its most impressive improvements reside with the technology that’s put in place to help assist those behind the wheel and keep them as safe as possible. While many safety features have emerged in recent years with varying degrees of quality, the question is no longer one of what features exist but rather what comes standard across all trim levels and what’s reserved for those willing to pay a higher price.

Subaru has decided to focus on making more things standard rather than making you pay extra. The 2023 Subaru Ascent will be equipped with the renowned EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package. This will be standard across all trim levels and provide peace of mind for the drivers who rely on Subaru to keep them safe and on the road. EyeSight provides a plethora of safety and driving assistance features, which include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering - One of the biggest achievements in driving assistance technology is Adaptive Cruise Control which monitors traffic patterns and adjusts your speed accordingly to allow a safe following distance and maximize reaction time.
  • Lane Keep Assist - This is similar to the technology utilized by the Adaptive Cruise Control system. Lane Keep Assist monitors your position on the road and will alert you if you begin to veer off course. This is ideal for situations where you have low visibility or become a bit distracted and don't realize you have started to drift.
  • Pre-Collision Braking - One of the biggest variables in a collision is a driver's reaction time. With Pre-Collision Braking, in the event of a potential collision, a warning will sound, and braking will be applied to allow you to come to a stop much sooner. The IIHS determined that this feature led to a 35% decrease in pedestrian-related injuries.
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management - The physics involved with the collision's outcome heavily depends upon an object's momentum. Limiting power to the engine’s throttle decreases speed and momentum, which helps to minimize the impact and damage from a potential collision.

The Subaru EyeSight Technology's biggest proponents have been the IIHS (Insurance Institute of Highway Safety). Studies conducted by the organization have determined that Subaru’s driving assistance technology has reduced rear-end collisions by 85%. Just remember, while these features are meant to enhance your safety on the road, they don’t replace the responsible habits of an experienced driver.
