Setting the Bar: The Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy combines some of the best features of Subaru's beloved Outback with the practicality of a sedan. This comes as little surprise, given the Legacy's automotive heritage. The four-door sedan was originally introduced in 1989 and represented the brand's first foray into the North American mid-size market. Available as both a sedan and station wagon, the Legacy built on Subaru's reputation for performance and handling and quickly gained a foothold in the ultra-competitive mid-size segment.

In 1995, Subaru introduced a new trim option for the Legacy, the Legacy Outback. Available in both 2.2-liter and 2.5-liter versions, the vehicle kept much of the familiar Legacy profile but introduced three distinct changes that would come to define Subaru for years to come. These included a raised suspension and roof, as well as a two-tone color scheme. While they might seem like subtle changes, the response was overwhelming, and before long, an entirely new vehicle was born. By 2000, the Legacy Outback was spun off into its own model, christened the Subaru Outback.

In taking one of its most popular sedans and tweaking it in response to the burgeoning SUV craze, Subaru was miles ahead of the competition. While crossover SUVs now dominate the domestic market, the original Legacy has retained its spot in the Subaru lineup by never resting on its laurels, seeing numerous redesigns and improvements over the years that have kept it well ahead of the curve.

The 2021 Legacy

The 2021 Legacy builds on these improvements even further, with enhancements that include a slate of new safety features, styling, and performance options. Like all Subaru vehicles, the 2021 Legacy includes the brand's tried-and-true symmetrical all-wheel drive powertrain, allowing drivers to tackle even the worst driving conditions with ease. This is especially welcomed in a four-door sedan like the Legacy, which builds on Subaru's track record of off-road success to deliver an unprecedentedly smooth ride.

The 2021 model comes in six available trims, offering a wide selection of features and upgrades that are sure to offer something for everyone. The Legacy 2.5i, Premium, Sport, and Limited all feature a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 182 horsepower, while the Limited XT and Touring XT models offer a significantly more powerful 260 horsepower 2.4-liter setup. All trim levels come with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), but those looking for a sportier experience will enjoy the latter two models, which boast a hair-raising zero to 60 mph time of 6.1 seconds.

With Subaru's background in SUVs and station wagons, it should come as little surprise that they've put an emphasis on cargo space in a traditional sedan like the Legacy. This is particularly noticeable on the 2021 model. With more than 105 cubic feet of interior passenger volume, the Legacy's cabin feels roomier than ever. This ample space bests some of its closest competitors by more than five cubic feet and doesn't even include the Legacy's ample trunk, which includes another 15 cubic feet of cargo space.

Named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Subaru Legacy makes sure safety never takes a backseat. The five-star safety rated sedan not only performs well above expectations in crash testing but also employs a full suite of leading driver-assistance technology to help ensure it never even reaches the point of impact. All Legacy models come with Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance system, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Pre-Collision Braking. With Subaru EyeSight technology, it's like you always have an extra pair of eyes on the road.
