A Look at the Subaru Forester

The Forester has been an integral part of the Subaru lineup since its debut in 1997. Since then, each of the five generations has demonstrated something a little newer and a little fresher but maintained the integrity of the original. With plenty of cargo room, ground clearance, and creature comforts in the cabin for drivers and passengers alike, there's a lot to love about the Subaru Forester.

Based on the impressive Impreza platform, the first generation of Forester claimed a ground clearance of 8.9 inches and 14.4 cubic feet of cargo volume. At the time, its role was to be a taller, bigger Subaru without stepping on the treads of its cargo-focused hatchback wagon siblings, such as the Outback and the Impreza. By the 2000 model year, the Forester was due for a little cosmetic work, and many fans were shocked to see that Subaru kept the same squared-off look, though now more refined.

Even the engine calls up square-type energy, with its nickname of "the boxer" due to its unique shape. Early Forester boxers range from a 2.5L diesel option to a 2.5L gasoline version, giving drivers the right level of zip for their on and off-road adventures. The 2.5L boxer format has become a constant throughout all generations of Forester, though with each new generation, power and capability have been increased thanks to the ingenuity of Subaru's engineers.

The Forester had a second-generation refresh in 2005 and started to look a little sportier and act a little more off-road capable. With standard all-wheel drive and a shape that can only be described as "boxy," the Forester's cargo space blossomed during the redesign to 57.7 cubic feet. Still, on the road, it handles with the same responsiveness and nimbleness as a regular sedan.

In 2013, Subaru's new generation of Forester really hit a sweet spot for handling, capability, and design. The fourth-generation was praised for its combination of top-notch cargo room with a sedan-like driving feel, as well as standard technology offerings that meet nearly every driver's needs, including Bluetooth, airbags, automatic headlights, and keyless entry.

The current generation of Subaru Forester launched in 2018, and with the many technological advances that have been made in the automotive industry, the line between "standard" and "Premium" has become blurrier. Still, the Forester's perfect balance of drivability and capability has remained unchanged.

The 2021 Forester

The 2021 Forester has started the model year off right with two prestigious awards from auto reviewer KBB.com, including the 2021 5-Year Cost to Own Award and the 2021 Best Resale Value Award. The Subaru Forester is also ranked #5 on the list of Best Compact SUVs for 2021, against some pretty heavy competition.

What distinguishes the Forester from every other compact SUV on the market today? Plenty! All-wheel drive remains standard, along with plenty of safety gear, such as steering responsive LED headlamps with automatic high beams. The new DriverFocus technology, which is standard on the Touring trim, is able to let drivers know if they're too distracted or tired to drive with its special combination of infrared sensors and facial recognition software.

Powered by a 2.5L Flat-4 "boxer," the 2021 Forester includes a selection of driving modes that can smooth the road out or give you greater control. With 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, you also have the ability to tow up to 1,500 pounds. The fuel economy is merciful for an SUV, with a combined EPA estimate of 29 miles per gallon.

Many drivers will also appreciate how easy it is to cart around cargo with the Forester. The opening to the rear cargo area is 51.3 inches wide, which means less wiggling and more easy loading. With all seats occupied, the Forester can accommodate 35.4 cubic feet of stuff, which expands to 76.1 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down.
